ST PETER’S SCHOOL: will be undergoing its usual cleaning and refurbishment during the first three weeks of the summer holidays, and St Mary’s Church in the School Hall will therefore be closed for three Sundays – 27 July and 3 and 10 August – reopening on 17 August. All are very welcome at the other churches in the parish during this time.
JUNIOR CHURCH: takes a break as usual for the school summer holidays. The autumn term for Junior Church begins on Sunday 21 September; meanwhile, children are especially welcome at all services.
CHOIR TOUR: Very special thanks to all who have organised and supported fundraising events and pledged sponsorship in aid of the Choir Tour, which departed from the Parish Church last Tuesday for All Saints’ Pastoral Centre, London Colney – visiting Ely Cathedral, King’s College Cambridge, St Sepulchre-without-Newgate in the City of London, and the Royal Hospital, Chelsea – returning to Leeds this Sunday evening, 27 July.
SUMMER SUNDAY EVENINGS: A reminder that there are weekly organ recitals in August on Sunday evenings from 7.45 to 8.35 pm. This will be the eleventh annual series of the popular Romantic Organ Masterworks concerts. Admission is free, with retiring collections for organ maintenance. All are welcome. Please tell your friends.
CHILDREN’S SOCIETY: Many thanks to all who supported last month’s Sponsored Knit at the Parish Church – and congratulations to the knitters! A member of LPC congregation raised the largest amount out of a very impressive total of £536.50.
TIME FOR CREATION: The Third European Ecumenical Assembly, representing the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant Churches, has recommended that the period from 1 September to 4 October should ‘be dedicated to prayer for the protection of and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles that reverse our contribution to climate change’. Saturday 4 October is the Feast of St Francis of Assisi [and World Animal Day]; fitting in with ecumenical recommendations, the churches in our parish will be observing Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 5 October, with the British Nuclear Test Veterans as usual attending the 10.30 Harvest Festival Eucharist at LPC.
MUSIC MASTER: Dr John Rutter CBE will be giving the address on this Autumn’s Friends of the Music Festival Sunday at 3.00 pm Evensong on Sunday 28 September. Do please put this date in your diary now and tell your friends and neighbours about it.

FOCUS ON … … … COMPANIONS OF OUR LORD
On 29th July we regularly celebrate the lives of the sisters Mary and Martha and their brother, Lazarus. Jesus was offered hospitality in their home and we know that he wept bitterly over the death of Lazarus. It was Martha who recognized Jesus as the Messiah and Mary who was commended by Jesus over her attentiveness to his teaching.
The examples set by this family, so loved by Jesus, are ones we can all follow:
· Recognizing and accepting Jesus as our Redeemer and guide and living our lives by following his words.
· Offering hospitality to those who are in need and relating to all who are searching for meaning and direction in their lives.
· Being attentive to the teachings of Jesus, to ensure that the values of the Kingdom are those which prevail.
As we remember this tiny family on Tuesday 29th July our Christian way of life can strengthened by the knowledge of their faith and love for Jesus.
Ann Nicholl
